Athletes Foot ~ Tinea

Do you have itchy feet? Maybe you have chronic dry skin and regular cream isn’t helping? Do you get moist skin in between your toes that sometimes splits? You could have Tinea Pedis (AKA Athletes Foot).

A lot of people know Athletes foot as being a condition that causes splitting and itchiness between the toes and is commonly caught in public showers or at public pools. Although this is true, it’s not always the case.

It is not uncommon for Tinea Pedis to be left undiagnosed and therefore not treated. This is because there is a range of different types of tinea pedis, all with their own unique presentation.

Tinea Pedis is a fungal skin infection that is contagious. It is generally associated with a range of risk factors including:

  • Walking barefoot in communal areas
  • Wearing damp socks as well as tight-fitting closed in shoes
  • Excessive sweating on the feet
  • Wearing the same shoes and socks for an extended period without washing them.
  • Weakened immune system
  • Frequent pedicures (not medical pedicures)

Depending on the type of Tine Pedis you have, if left untreated it can lead to splitting in the skin or blister formation, which increases your risk of infection. It is also common for the fungus to spread to other areas of the body, such as the groin area and nails if it is not treated.
